Bienvenido~

Peter Hurd inscribed the Spanish word for welcome in the cement driveway of his home and studio in San Patricio, New Mexico. Today, his son, Michael, continues this tradition of welcoming guests to his family's Sentinel Ranch.

A rich history...

When Peter Hurd settled in the Hondo Valley in 1933, he added a new dimension to a long and fascinating history stretching back to the first documented inhabitants of the area, the Jornada Mogollon people.  Later, Apaches hunted and farmed in the valley and surrounding mountains.

Mexican homesteaders who moved here in the 1800s used Sentinel Hill, for which the ranch was named, as a lookout to guard against raiding Apaches and Mexican banditos.  Ranching and farming was the main industry during those years, and today the descendants of the original homesteaders still tend their herds and orchards.

Peter Hurd brought a previously unseen tradition of polo from West Point to southern New Mexico.  Today, the Hurd-La Rinconada is located at the corner of the family polo field and features original works by Peter Hurd, Henriette Wyeth-Hurd, Michael Hurd, Andrew Wyeth and N.C. Wyeth. High-quality giclees and prints are also available, framed and unframed, from the Gallery.

Michael Hurd strives to preserve the natural beauty of the Hondo Valley, the artistic tradition of his family and the unique culture of this historic community.  The peace and solitude of the ranch and availability of lodging at our charming guest houses, makes it an ideal location for special events such as weddings, retreats, corporate meetings or seminars.
