Paul Horgan,
the man, the writer, the artist
Paul Horgan was a man of many talents. He was not only a gifted
writer, he was also an accomplished artist. His hand added a light and
humorous testament to his work. Cadets at New Mexico Military Institute
went to Mr. Horgan with library books in hand to have him individually
craft a library card pocket for them, each was appropriate for the
subject of the book.
Peter Hurd, a famous southwest artist, was also one of the young cadets
at N.M.M.I. and they forged a lifelong friendship. Paul Horgan was a
close friend of Peter and Henriette Wyeth Hurd and eventually became
godfather to their youngest son, MIchael. Although Mr. Horgan passed
away in 1995, Michael Hurd and Hurd La Rinconada Gallery is extremely
fortunate to offer his personal collection of library card pockets
totaling 253 cards. These are the only remaining pieces available of
such unique memorabilia. The University of California at Los Angeles
(UCLA) DeGolyer Library both have small collections. The examples give
you an idea of the talent of Paul Horgan. |
